The New Citizen Kane sharpens his vision on EP, "Free to Feel"
There's a real sense of clarity running through "Free to Feel," and it's exciting to hear an artist narrow in on exactly the sound they want to explore. As the first installment in the four part rollout of PSYCHEDELIKA Pt. 2, this EP marks a genuinely compelling evolution for The New Citizen Kane, and by his own account, it's the work he's most proud of to date. We’ve heard so much, and honestly, we might have to agree!
At its core, this project asks a pretty bold question, whether we're actually willing to wake up and challenge our own beliefs. That's a heavy thing to build a project around, but Kane handles it with real range across these tracks. Some songs lean personal and vulnerable, others get more philosophical, and some even venture into political territory.
Compared to some of his earlier, more club ready electronic work, "Free to Feel" feels noticeably more immersive and synth-pop focused, and that shift really works in his favor. It's the coolest kind of narrowing, less about chasing a dancefloor and more about building a cohesive sonic world, which fits perfectly with Kane's whole approach to music as world-building rather than just song by song releases. With all that being said though, let us confidently say these songs are still very danceable!!
The EP’s lead single "Metallic" does a great job setting the tone right out of the gate after “Dream Logic” as it’s all energy and hypnotic, neon-lit atmosphere, capturing that feeling of finally letting instinct take over. This new era feels bolder and more unfiltered than what's come before, and the rest of the EP builds nicely on that foundation. You get to dig into lyricism much more all the while holding onto that signature sound that makes The New Citizen Kane him.
Kane's voice is so obviously a real standout throughout this whole project. It's outstanding, carrying weight whether the song is leaning chaotic or restrained and all those human contradictions he's always been drawn to exploring. These songs genuinely pop, catchy and textured without ever losing that slightly chiller, more focused vibe that separates this release from his earlier work.
