The Sunspots’ “Cut To The Chase” brings Classic Soul into the modern era

There are songs that aim for nostalgia, and then there are songs that capture the spirit of an era while feeling completely alive in the present. “Cut To The Chase,” the debut single from The Sunspots, lands firmly in the latter category. Released on June 5th, 2026, the track is an irresistible burst of soul, warmth, and positivity that feels like stepping into a sun drenched park festival where the worries of everyday life temporarily disappear for a moment in time.

From its opening moments, “Cut To The Chase” establishes a groove that is nearly impossible to resist. Anchored by a vibrant horn section, the song immediately channels the communal spirit of classic soul records from the 1960s while featuring a modern production that gives every instrument room to shine.

Built around themes of love, freedom, and letting go of life's daily burdens, “Cut To The Chase” radiates optimism without ever feeling forced. There’s an authenticity to its joy that makes the experience genuinely infectious. By the time the chorus arrives, it becomes almost impossible not to smile along with it. That’s not to say the first 30 seconds immediately get you into the fun.

A huge part of the song’s success comes from vocalist Christian Erik, whose performance is outstanding throughout! When Lewis Richards, owner of 17th Street Recording in Costa Mesa, brought his collection of soul inspired songs to Erik, he clearly found the perfect voice to bring them to life. Erik delivers every line with an undeniable sense of soul. His voice feels timeless in the most lush way.

The instrumental performances deserve equal praise. Lewis Richards handles guitar, bass, keys, songwriting, production, mixing, and mastering duties with remarkable confidence. Every element of the arrangement feels carefully crafted while retaining an organic looseness that allows the music to breathe. The horn arrangements are particularly exceptional, adding energy and momentum to every section of the track.

Meanwhile, drummer Zeb Dekofsky provides a killer rhythmic foundation that keeps everything moving with effortless flow. His playing gives the song its pulse, creating the kind of groove that encourages movement from the very first beat.

The production deserves special recognition as well. While the song embraces vintage soul influences, it never sounds trapped in the past. It feels like the song captures the spirit of togetherness and celebration that made classic soul so enduring while presenting it through a contemporary lens. Fast forward 60 years from that heyday and you’ve got a hit!

As debut singles go, this is an incredibly promising introduction. The Sunspots have arrived with a song that feels refreshingly genuine. We urge everyone to crank it up, go for a walk while enjoying, and of course to follow along to stay tuned for more.
