Palumbo celebrates Modern Rock on new EP, "More Tales From the Big Smoke"
Believe us when we say few things are more satisfying than a rock record that understands exactly what it wants to be. More Tales From the Big Smoke, the new 5 song EP from Sydney-based band Palumbo doesn’t hide behind something it’s attempting to be. Instead, it delivers five tightly crafted songs packed with energy, personality, and enough guitar driven swagger to remind you why rock music remains such a powerful vehicle for storytelling.
Led by songwriter and performer Dion Palumbo, Palumbo has built a reputation around blending Americana, blues, funk, and Brit rock influences into a sound that feels both classic and contemporary. Recorded between London, Ashley Manor Studios, and Australia's Blue Mountains alongside producer Simon Willey, More Tales From the Big Smoke arrives as a confident record that explores working class ambition, disconnection, resilience, reinvention, and the ongoing search for meaning in an increasingly complicated world. The lyrics are truly as powerful as the instrumentation is!
Each of the five tracks feels like an exploration of a slightly different corner of the rock spectrum. One moment the band leans into blues-infused grit, the next they're embracing elements of seemingly every rock subgenre under the sun. We immediately got such a Jack White feel to the immense amount of versatility this record holds. The record never feels scattered though. It literally unfolds like a carefully curated journey through the infinite possibilities of modern rock music.
Dion Palumbo’s vocals undoubtedly serve as the anchor throughout the entire EP. There's a classic rock quality to his voice that feels instantly familiar without ever sounding dated. That could be the way it was produced, but regardless, the command he has over these already breathtaking instrumentals was impressive.
The chemistry between Palumbo, drummer Garret Barker, vocalist Joanna Turner, and bassist Hernan Alarcon is evident throughout every track. The rhythm section keeps everything moving with precision, while the guitar work consistently delivers the kind of punch and character that rock fans crave. These arrangements are loud, tight, and full of life, balancing musicianship with pure entertainment value. Try your hardest not to bob your head to “WHATEVER”, we dare you.
An underrated part of the EP for us was how much fun the band appears to be having. That sense of enjoyment radiates from the speakers. This thing really has everything though. It offers thoughtful songwriting, musical diversity without losing focus, and polished production with a real personality.
By the time the “BUILDINGS IN THE SKY” fades out, one thing became abundantly clear, Palumbo crushed it. This is a record built on strong songs, sharp performances, and genuine passion. Go ahead and click those links below to embark on the journey, to follow along, and to stay tuned for the latest!
