The House Flies preview New Album with gripping single, "Derelict Crawl"
Let’s get it out of the way right out of the gate, this song absolutely rocks. There's a real satisfaction in hearing a band tighten their sound into something more direct without losing any of their character, and "Derelict Crawl" does exactly that. As the first single from The House Flies' upcoming second album, "Lions and Ore," out November 6th, this track offers the perfect preview of what's ahead while standing perfectly well on its own.
The song opens slowly, taking its time before hitting you with a wall of sound that pulls together pretty much every corner of rock the band has explored so far. That patient build makes the eventual payoff feel earned, and once it lands, the track settles into a steady, driving post-punk rhythm anchored by dense guitars.
Vocally, this track stays fairly subdued for the most part, which suits the song's brooding atmosphere well, but there's a real sense of control in knowing exactly when to bring more intensity into the delivery. The latter half, especially on the vocal side, opens up into a performance that’s truly one for the ages. However on the mixing end, it still never overpowers the instrumentals you’re about to hear!
Made up of a four piece lineup featuring Alex Riggen, Burnie Eckhardt, Ozzie Woods, and Nick Pompou, their chemistry comes through in how tightly everything locks together here. The instrumentation throughout is excellent, drawing from goth rock, shoegaze, grunge, and melodic guitar while still keeping that distinctly Midwestern grit The House Flies have built their identity around since their earlier releases. For fans of rock and all its changing forms, especially those drawn to acts like Protomartyr, Interpol, or Joy Division, "Derelict Crawl" should land right in that sweet spot. It captures the heavier, more repetitive side of what's coming on "Lions and Ore" without giving away the album's slower, more atmospheric detours, which makes it a really smart choice as a lead single.
